try going to start, then run, and type "iexplore" then hit enter. This should open up internet explorer. If this works and you need an icon you can then go on your desktop, right click, go to new, shortcut, and have it point to iexplore. Additionally if you go to getfirefox.com and download Firefox after installing you should have a new icon on your desktop to load the Firefox browser. If neither of these methods work for you make sure to get a good antivirus/spyware program and do a full system scan. Sometimes malicious software can cause these types of issues. If you need something free try going to free.grisoft.com and downloading their AVG Anti-Virus and AVG Anti-Spyware. Hope this helps!

".internet explorer used to be an icon on my desktop but it isn't there anymore..."
Here's how to put back your shortcut Icon to the desktop again...Seems this is where "you" want it and are looking for it...
1. Click Start, then Click All programs.
2. Look for Internet Explorer, then Rightclick on it, then select from the shortcut menu, Send to- desktop create shortcut and it will be back on your desktop again...

Click on start on the left lower corner. Then click on search from the menu. Now click on the place where you want search to look for Internet explorer and type in what your looking for. This is a good way to find things on your computer. When you find it open where it says it is. Then right click on it with your mouse and click on create a short cut from the menu. I hope this helps. It's worth a try.

A note about Mercury2010's suggestions: I would choose the first one because it will give you the Properties Tab on the icon, while just creating a shortcut to iexplore.exe probably won't.

right click on the desktop and click properties.
then click the desktop tab. then go to customize desktop.
put a check in the internet explorer box.

OR--------------------
right click on the desktop and choose new > shortcut
type in
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" in the "target" field
and
%HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%
in the "start in" field

Then apply or ok. Either on should do it.
