I just got a pet rabbit and I was told that you couldn't hold it too much or spend too much time together or it will die. Is this true?

You have to know HOW to hold your rabbit, and really, it is best if you put the rabbit down in a safe place and just gently scratch his back and pet and massage him.

Rabbits have very delicate bones and are the bottom of the food chain... therefore, every time you approach your bunny, his natural instinct will be to try and get away. If you hold him incorrectly, he might try to break free of your grasp by kicking out... in kicking his legs suddenly, he could break his own back... broken backs are sad, but common injuries in pet rabbits. The shock of the trauma usually leads to death.

Here is a link that is all about rabbit ownership. It will give you all the info you need about how to have a great relationship with your bunny, while keeping him happy and healthy.

Here is an excellent article from that webpage about proper ways to handle and lift your rabbit:

Wow, no... that doesn't sound right to me. If anything, people should be more worried about neglecting the rabbit, rather than spending too much time with it.

However, you could kill a rabbit with love by holding it wrong or squeezing it too hard, or adding vitamins to its food and accidently overdosing it. Or possibly an untame rabbit may die of fright, but that's probably more likely if you are swinging it around or something, not holding it correctly.

Some rabbits love to be held. Some find it stressful and
will suffer from being held too much. You may want to
slowly spend time with your bunny and build up the time
holding it. Rabbits like to explore and spend time grooming
eating and sleeping just like any other animal giving it a little
space is not such a bad idea.

No. That is crazy. Rabbits are rather easy to take care of. There are many sources to guide you in pet stores or the internet, or even the library. The most important thing is to feed it the correct things. Too much raw veggies can be bad. Check up on that... Good luck!

That's not true. You can love the bunny all you want. I have 5 bunnies. 4 of them loves to be pet and carried. They sit very still when I put them on my lap and pet their head and rub their faces. 1 just hates to be touched. When she was a baby, she loved to be held, but we bought another rabbit as a companion for her and that new bunny had scabies which is contagious. While that bunny was in treatment, we brought Baby to get bathed in case the scabies got to her. But the vet didn't know how to handle her and she fell and broke her leg. It split in half, but we were lucky to find a good vet who connected her leg. But she never liked to be touched by humans again.

It is true that you have to handle the rabbit with care because they have very sensitive spines and they can hurt themselves if they get scared and starts to struggle.

If you have questions, you can always visit websites like www.mybunny.org (Zooh Corner Rabbit Rescues) or Bunny Bunch Boutique who are rabbit rescues. They can answer your emails if you can't find your questions on their websites.

NO! Many rabbits don't like to be held, but spend as much time with it and love on it as much as you want hun. The more time, the better. Whoever said that have no idea what they are talking about.

well it really depends on how old it is. if it is a young one, then you should think twice about handling it too much, it isn't familiar to all of the contact and movement. but dont handle it too less, no human or animal contact can kill it, just like you and me. but no, you cannot love something to death, i thing it is impossible.
i dont think, either, that it will die because you hold it too much, unless you keep it with you ALL THE TIME!

yah, i've heard it too, but all animals need some time to htemselves. To much handling will put stress on your rabbit, espicially if it's still young, and it can die.
