I give the the truck gas and it stops. I have had the truck for four years. 2001 F150 w/76000 miles. New belt and some belt dressing out of frustration. Tensioner is plenty tight still. Fluid is full. Gear box is coated in rust, looks like the rust that gets on something freshly grinded on and left out over night. Gear box has hose coming from it that covered in oil buildup, no known leaks from engine to explain the oil on the hose. Is my gearbox going bad? It looks like it has been replaced to me. How can I check to see if the gearbox is bad or if the pump is bad?

If its squeking when you turn it is more likely to be the Power steering belt. If it is a single V belt (shaped like one v instead of lots of little v's) Make sure the belt that was put on is the correct v-section ie the angle of the v that fits into the groove.

A good way to test what belt is squeking if there is more than one - get the belt turning over and spray a bit of silicon spray on the one you think it is and see if that improves it or makes it disappear. This is not a fix though, as after the silicon wears off it will squeek again.

Worst case take it to a workshop.

Good luck

The hose is crimped to a metal line and probably leaking at the crimp--clean off the oil residue with brake cleaner and a rag and then check every couple of days for a new leak to see where it's at...probably have to replace the hose and line unit. Squeak could be because of a pump going bad and binding up or maybe a bad bearing in the pump or tensioner. Might be possible to replace the pressure control valve for the pump if it has an external one or just put another pump on it and try adding a filter to the return line---parts stores should carry it---see article below.
