When I bought my Mali yesterday the pet store told me that the heat lamp should not be left on when I am not in the house since they are not a completely safe light and to just leave my Repti Glo light on. This seems like it will not make the tank stay at 120 degrees throughout the day. I'd like to know what your experiences are and some suggestions on what to do if I'm gone 8 hours a day and need to keep the light off and the lizard warm.

Thanks in advance.

I'm also curious on how much to feed it and how often. I gave it about 10 dandalion/endive leaves earlier and I came home they were all gone. He also got a cm cube piece of carrot with a tiny sprinkle of reptivite. I gave him a few more pieces tonight.. but I'm not sure if it's good to feed them late. thanks again.

If it's not safe then what do I do?? Please do not just tell me it isn't safe and give no other advice. I really want to keep my Mali happy and safe.

I have 3 enclosures that have heat lamps on for 12 hours a day. They are on timers. I use regular light bulbs and they are in those silver reflector domes. Very safe. Your Mali needs those high temps all day.
As for food, I make mine a fresh salad every morning. Mix a little Calcium/D3 in several times a week. I use lots of dark greens such as collars, mustards, turnip greens. Please check out www.deerfernfarms.com for more diet and care tips. www.reptilerooms.com (click on forums and find Uromastyx) is also excellent source of info.

Unless you have any flammable fabrics close to the lamp, there is no problem leaving the lamp on while you are out of the house. If it is a white light, make sure it is shut off at night so it is not to disturb your Mali's sleep scedule and to allow for the temperature to drop as it normally would at night. Or if you are looking for a lamp that you can leave on all day and all night, try going with a red lamp. The reptile cannot see the red so it will not disturb it.

In my experience...the MOST unsafe way to keep a reptile warm is a heat rock. This is because it's direct contact with the animal's heat source which will allow your animal to be burned. I work in a pet store and I see it all the time. I ask the customer if they have a heat rock. 100% of them say "Yes.".

As safe as trying to light a cigarette with a spark plug.
