SATA 1 transfers data between the drive and the PC at 150MB/sec. SATA 2 transfers data between the drive and the PC at 300MB/sec.
Sata 1 drives will work on a SATA II adapter, but will default to 150MB/sec.
Some SATA II drives will work on SATA 1 controllers, but you must change a jumper setting so that the transfer speed is reduced, so again it defaults to 150MB/sec.
