It is normal for a exhaust system to get hot-but not extreme. do you smell any strange odors? The catalytic converter is filled with a ceramic type clay material-if something is wrong with the system this can possibly start to melt which will give off a bad odor that you cant miss. Almost like rotten eggs.

A catilityc converter is a polltuion device. It absorbs pollutants from going into the air. They do wear out after a while, and if your is getting red hot you need to get it replaced. However before you do so you dont have to do it 2 times, have the repair shop figure out why its going bad. The converter is susseptible to damage from bad things going into the exhaust system. If you replace it and bad stuff is still going into you exhaust you will replace again.

When converters get that hot they are burning raw fuel. This means some problem with your engine is allowing a lot of unburned gas to be pushed into the exhaust. This over heating of the converter will cause the Catalyst to melt and plug up the converter.

The fuel mixture could be rich, and that could make the converter get very hot. Is your "Check Engine" light on?
