I have $7000 to spend and they seem to be the two best choices.

Ride them both, then choose.
They are 2 pretty different rides.

What would be the point if you weren't happy with it?
Who cares about re-sale? A motorcycle may be an investment, but it shouldn't be for monetary returns.

if deep down u want a harley, no other bike will give u want ur looking for. metric's have always been cheaper, but how many metric bikes do u usually see for sale that is 15 yrs old and older?
with harley's, u can get a wide range of parts for either repair when the time comes, or customization. metric's isnt exactly famous for customization if that's what ur looking for. resale value aside, he who fails to do even the simple maintainence items will reduce a good running bike to junk. in looking over alot of other bikes; victory, honda, yammie, kawa, zuki....the absolute easiest thing that should able to be done is the oil change.....and sportsters have everything basically in the open for easy access.

price wise, the 883 will be a bit cheaper than the 1200, but the 1200 for me gives a better ride and more power. but the 883 is also known to be able to become a very potent little hotrod if u have the coin for the engine upgrades...but u could easily do that with the 1200 as well, and get an even bigger engine with the stage3.

for those that say that the sportsters have a bad ride, they obviously have never been on 1 with the right seat. i can ride 400 miles at least in a day on my sportster. i put on the sundowner seat, and the miles goes by effortlessly. at slow speed, they do feel slightly top heavy, but is manageable. in the twisties, i have alot of fun on mine. it wont lean over 60 degrees, but it also wasnt designed for that. my bike is also carburated and so far, it's getting about 53 mpg. not bad for only a 3.3 gallon tank.

u'd have an easier time at slow speeds on a sporty than a vtx. that's a very big bike to sling around.

I have a 2005 Honda VTX1300. If I had to choose between a VTX and Sportster agian I would still go with Honda. It is cheaper and a very nice riding bike. Harley's are more about torque than size but the Sportster is just two small of a bike for me at 6 foot tall, and a little top heavy to. If you want a Harley go with another type of Harley other than a Sportster. Other wise you will not regret the Honda VTX. You can also buy alot of accesrois for the VTX at places like www.jpcycles.com or www.xtremerevolution.com. I would like a Harley to but until I can afford a nice one I like my Honda.

Honda will give you a beefier bike and much less maintenance so less time in the shop. You will be able to ride the Honda more but as you know, Harley is a name and not that much of an inferior bike these days. Depends on what you plan to do with it. The Sportster is kinda known as a "***** Bike" and the Honda isn't. I would get a 1300 VTX over a Sportster myself.

I have owned nothing but Honda's for the last 15 years. I own a Honda VTX 1800F now and love it.

Harley is a well made bike and will keep it's value higher for resale.

If I were you I would try to demo ride both and see which one you feel is best for your riding habits and likes.

The sportster will hold it's value, but you will get more bike with the honda. I am facing the same question for myself, I am completely split on the subject. For people who claim Honda is a better bike the reliability is just as good. it you ask any dealer which manufacturer is better they will say for quality they are all about equal no days.
Look at what you want and sit on them all. if you can take a test ride do that also. Good luck with your new bike and don't forget your helmet.

Honda VTX 1300S - definatey - you will get more bike overall because you arent paying for the Harley name. You will also get reliability with the Honda.

If you choose the Sportster, you would probaly be better off with a moped. haha

If you want to ride, get the Honda. If you want a rough ride and need to keep up a lot of maintenance, buy the HD.
Even though the Honda looses value, you will enjoy the ride more. HD came out with the Evo engine, but you still get vibrated to death.
