The most famous rock band in the world is the Beatles. They beat out the Rolling Stones, Zeppelin, U2, etc. They are listened to and admired in every country in the world...even North Korea. People in the most remote parts of the world know the Beatles. If you're talking fame alone - not record sales, or anything else, The Beatles are the ones.

It has to be "The Beatles" any other would be just personal favoritism. On success alone, the Beatles would be way up there, but they succeeded with more that just success. They set the bar high, they broke down the Industry standards, Politics and created an endeavorment to evolve musically and to bravely & freely experiment. How many Rock Genre's can be credited to them? The answer is of course is... Most of them! Even the song "Helter Skelter" has been post-declared as the very first Proto-Heavy Metal song, which was written long before any Axe Grinders! Rock & Roll was just a small door that let in Elvis and most of the early white Rockers. The Beatles opened the floodgates and Rock Music became incredibly diversed, racially and culturally mixed and will out live us all. The WHO said it best...
LONG LIVE ROCK!

Whether you like them or not, The Beatles are the most important band in rock. They were the first totally self-contained band, ie they wrote their own songs, (except for a few covers) and played their own instruments. Everything that happened in the pop genre after that night on the Ed Sullivan Show owes something to the Beatles.
One more thing, the Beatles did not steal existing songs and call them their own like Led Zep and the Stones did. And please kids, don't write here that Robert Johnson stole his lyrics from Page & Plant. It just makes you look silly.

Most famous depends on how you define it. The BEATLES are probably the most universally known. But KISS have had more worldwide exposure and the most merchandise to be bought the world over. I would have to say one of those 2 bands would be most famous!

The Beatles.. they broke into the industry when there were no other bands like that... they created controversy with their fashion and statements (the Jesus thing), they caused quite a stir when they arrived in the U.S. They set the trend for different types of rock music everywhere.
