G. H. W. Bush vs. Hayes:
which was a better president and why?

I know that Bush was most noted for his ability with foreign policy and the Gulf War and that his major down fall was his lack of interest in domestic issues.

Hayes ended Reconstruction in the South and his honest administration restored the nation's faith in the Republican party after the corruption that occurred during the administration of Ulysses S. Grant.

so.... which one??
Thank you all in advance for your help! I really appreciate it :)

Wow, everyone who answered this question must not be able to read. You did ask about G.H.W. Bush right? And everyone answered about G.W.Bush. Well, to answer your question i think Beorge Herbert Walker Bush, our 41st President from 1988 to 1992 was a great President. He had a significant impact on the World and the end of the cold war. He took over from Reagan at a very critical and tumultuous time in the World. he helped to organize and coordinate theend of Communism and the fragmentation of the former Societ Union. And jsut when he got that headed in the right direction an d thought he could get a little relief, Saddam invaded Kuwait and he then had to organize a coalition for over 22 coutnries. He also stayed withing the boudnaries of Internation al law and cemented the U.S.'s place as the Global Superpower and leader of the free world. He stopped short in Iraq, and did not assasinate Saddam or remove hime from power because he knew, as we are now learning, it would mean the U.S. would have to occupy Iraq and would be a troublesome mess at best. If he had had another term, instead of Clinton winning that election alot of other issues may have been dealt with. So, G.H.W. Bush gets my vote.

Scott742 - Failure as President, um...The entire world was chaos at that time, the Sovie Union, the Berlin wall had just come down, the international scene was insane during his Presidency, He handled more effectively due to his years in Politics, Cia, Ambasodorships and as President, he was and still is well respected around the world, go back to your hsitory book. and understand the times in which hewas president, NOw if you were talking about G.W.Bush the 43rd, well yes he is a failure, but 41-no way,.

I think Hayes was a great man. As you said, he brought an end to corruption, and he used his position to heal a rift that was dominating the nation. Some critics say that ending reconstruction was dangerous because it strengthened the former rebels in the South, but that had to be inevitable if the nation was to ever again recover. You can't hold a people down forever and have a future. Alas, it still took the South generations to recover, but most of that was their own fault for allowing racism to persist.

George H.W. Bush was largely a failure as president. He eased up taxes, while promising otherwise; he half-heartedly pursued a war in Iraq that should have been avoided in the first place, and then didn't see it through, leaving us with ten more years of Saddam's nightmare; and he allowed regulations to expand in many areas. I found him very disappointing as a president.

I am too young to really remember H W Bush, but it seems alot of people felt he was very out of touch with many things, and as you say the Gulf War didn't help. I would probably say Hayes is more respected as he had no major troubles during his tenure and brought trust back to the office.

Myles D - It might help to actually read some of the answers instead of just insulting everyone. If you did you would've seen I was talking about George Herbert Walker Bush. I'm sorry to take away your feeling of superiority, but it just had to be done.

I'd have to honestly say, I've not much of a clue with this question. But I've witnessed every slip, nuance, smirk, gaffe, lie, cover-up, squirm, bald-faced mistruth, scandal, resignation, failure, flop, and hypocrtical act of the Bush Administration up front over the last 7 years to really have a finely tuned sense of what a nutjob this loser of a President truly is. Hayes, not so much.....but for now I guess the big loser el grande is still the Sitcom President and his Iraqi Follies.

GHW Bush didn't do too badly... after all, he did have to run Washington after Reagan's gears slipped and he went all Alzheimer's in office... all while putting up the bulls*#@ front that he was only the vice-president. (He did run the CIA at one time, and the CIA are some slippry motherf*#@ers!!!)

According to the "experts": Hayes ranks 24th/42 and G.H.W.

Bush will be known as one of the best presidents in history. Our economy has thrived in spite of everything that happened and the war on terror is a necessary war.
