Cost depends on how big the tank is and can vary widely from differing parts of the country. I've seen it as low as $100 to as high as $400.

How often depends on a number of things: how much water your family uses, whether or not you use your garbage disposal, and more. For a family of 4 with a 2000 gallon tank, you should pump it out around every 5.5 years.

Someone mentioned additives, such as Rid-X or others... don't waste your money. There have been lots of studies showing the additives do not help, and in some cases can hurt.

The septic tank is supposed to be pumped out - it protects the secondary system (whatever is after the tank, such as a leach field, sand filter, mound, etc) and if the tank is not regularly pumped, then those solids will cause problems and eventually the failure of the secondary system (expensive!).

That would depend on how many people live in the household. For a household of 4, it is wise to have it maintained every 5 years. Also, make sure you space out your loads of laundry. Don't do all of your laundry in one day. Do a load once a day or every other day. Don't put a lot of debris through your garbage disposal. Throw away any bulk in the trash or put in your compost pile. Also, don't flush any debris down your toilet (feminine hygene products, cig butts etc) and use only the bare minimum of bath tissue when necessary. Also, never park a vehicle in the area your leach lines are running or where your septic tank is located or plant trees like weeping willow or pepper trees. The roots from these aggressive growing trees will clog up a septic system quicker than greased lightning. If you follow these simple rules, you can avoid severe problems.

The cost here runs between $250 and $500 depending on the size of your tank.

On average, 5 - 7 years should be sufficient cleaning, assuming you don't have a garbage disposal and run your washer drain water into a separate dry well. Use a bacterial replacement product such as Rid X or some such, every few months and it will help keep everything working well. Average cost if you know right where the opening is and dig up the lid area in preparation for the cleaner man, is about $100- 125.

RidX is NOTHING like Drano. Drano is a caustic substance that eats away quickly - think acid. RidX is a micro-organism that consumes solid waste in your septic tank - think caterpillars. They did get that you should use RidX monthly to help prevent system back-ups. How often to clean? Too many factors affect the answer. Where do you live? What is your perc? What is the capacity of the holding tank? What type of septic system? How many people are using the system? Do you use organic detergents? Do you use bleach? See what I mean?
