depends on how much you smoke ...the placenta acts as an accessory liver , filtering the blood between you and baby, but is\ts only a temporary organ with a finite amount that it can efefctively filter over the course of 40 weeks. The more chemical components the placenta filters out the quicker it ages ...and placental age , or garde , IS documented on every ultrasound. Graded 1 thru 3 , three being the oldest and most irregular looking sonographically , and is usually only seen in late pregnancy.

Usually at 20 weeks , the placenta is still a grade 1 , maybe pushing an early grade 2 ...if we see a solid grade 2 , or even grade 2 pushing 3 , then we know that this mother is either a smoker , drinker , or a recreational drug user . The older a placenta gets , the less it's filtering it's performing... it's being used up , so to speak . The less filtering , the more harmful components are reaching baby. That's where the low birth weights and fetal alcohol syndrome( in drinkers) come in to play.

Hope this helps :-)

Good luck!
Ej

I quit smoking right after I found out. Now that I am a non smoker I can easily spot a smoker by the smell whether they are smoking or not. It stinks! I am never going back to smoking after I have this baby I didnt realize how much I stunk from it. I am not sure if the doc can tell by the u/s but they may smell it on you. If you are a smoker you should really try to quit it's best for both you and the baby.

Hi Sara,

Doctors cannot tell ( I am pretty sure) unless they smell smoke on you, or may suspect later on if the baby is lower in birth weight, but they can only advise you not to smoke, and as a mother and a nurse for 8 years, I also smoked and quit once I found out I was pregnant, however I don't know your situation, but strongly advise you to try to stop for the sake of the unborn child, it would only benefit your baby. Alot of people don't know this, but smoke on even your clothing while holding your children can contribute to respiratory problems (even if you are smoking outside first) such as asthma. I have seen that first hand. so imagine what it could do if they were exposed directly from the parent,as they receive everything you take for yourself. Just something to think about. Best of luck to you and your baby in your pregnancy though :)

Nope. Not likely. Other than smelling it on her clothing.

If she doesn't inform them that she smokes, that is her business. Millions of women smoked while pregnant in the 60s and 70s. While some babies are affected by being a little smaller, most will come out fine. Why she doesn't tell them? Don't know. Maybe her insurance rate would go up or she just doesn't want another damn lecture.

I have 3 children so I know what I am talking about, They could defin tell with a vaginal ultrasound plus if she were 4 or 5 months she might be showing some also. But yes they would defin catch it! Not to add if their doing a pap smear they may feel her stomach and would be able to feel a huge diffrence. Did the dr say she was??

If you are pregnant and smoking I highly advise you to stop. It's not about you anymore.... think about your baby!!! Do you really need to know if your Dr. can tell if you are lying? Why not just be honest with your Dr. and yourself so you can get the help you need to quit rather than putting your babies health at stake? I am 13 1/2 wks pregnant, and I have smoked for 13+ years. The day I found out I just quit cold turkey. I had no other option. It has been hard, but 4 months later and I don't even think about it. If I can do it so can you. Good luck, and think about your baby!

Not by ultrasound, but I never yet met a smoker that I couldn't tell by the smell. No matter how they tried to conceal it.

probably only if they are were a really heavy smoker and there was some sort of evidence from it.

but i don't think they can tell. my doctors didn't say anything to me. or even ask if i was or not.

Better chances of finding out by smelling her.
Smokers even sweat a smokey smell ( ask a non smoker)

If your preggers... dont smoke!

God Forgive Me, but I smoked occasionally, never said a word with either pregnancy, and none of my doctors ever knew otherwise
