If you live there, you will see it soon. Apparently a brood of 17 year cicadas is due to emerge this month in northern Illinois.
The cicada is a pretty fly, sometimes called a locust because or the biblical style appearance of certain cicadas, every 17 years or 13 years, depending on the species. There are also "annual" cicadas which, though they do spend several years as nymphs, do not all emerge in the same year but are staggered, some emerging each fall.
See, the cicadas spend years underground in the larval stage, then emerge together to mate and lay eggs. They are pretty much harmless, unlike locusts, but if there are enough of them they can be noisy. They sing. There will be different species emerging at the same time; each species has its own song.

Cicadas, big bugs, harmless, but a bit scary if they fly at you. Millions of bugs come out of the ground every year, cicadas are just bigger than most and make a lot of noise. I've heard them, but I've never seen a live one, only the husk of its skin.

It's cicadas and yes they are coming. Wik has a decent article about why they have a 17 year cycle.
