I'm running WindowsXP on a laptop and I need the computer to read the CD drive first. Currently it's reading the hard drive first. How do I get into that menu that let's me change which drive the computer reads first on startup?

Thanks in advance.

You need to boot into the BIOS (or setup) to change it. When you restart your pc, watch for something like "Setup=F12" -- usually on the laptop makers "splash" screen (or logo in other words.) You can move around inside Setup and if you think you made any changes you shouldn't have you can always "Exit without saving changes" and try again. There are directions in there on how to change stuff.

On my laptop there is also a "Console" type thing inside Windows that I can change the boot sequence. Look in your All Programs for any of your laptop manufacturers folders and see if you see something like that. (I'm in the wrong OS right now to find out exactly what mine is called.) It's quicker to change it in there if you have that.

You may have a manual in there somewhere that may say exactly what key to press at boot or cover a "System Console" if you have that on yours.

Whatever the case... don't forget to change it back like I always do!

Hi. you would have to change it in the bios. Each bios utility is a little different, but to get to the bios, you would press either F1 or F10 to get to the boot menu. When your computer starts up, it will tell you which one it is. If you pass it, reboot it again, and press it until you get in the bios. It should be under the Boot menu. Hope this helps. God bless.

It's usually the F8 key, you tap it repeatedly after you power up. This takes you into the BIOS. You'll look for the Bootup Sequence. You're in a dos environment and use your keyboard not your mouse to make your selections.
