Generally, you do not pay an agent, he/she gets a percentage of the pay from whatever work you obtain. Above answerer talks about West Coast, so if you are in the East Coast/ NYC, get a copy of "Ross Reports New York" a monthly periodical that lists all the agents in NYC.. You can then send picture and resume to them... Many NYC newsstands carry this periodical, but your best bet is to go to the Playwright's Bookstore. Good luck.

You don't really hire an agent. They take you on and anytime you get work they recieve 10% of your pay (that's for NY i don't know if it's different anywhere else). An agent signs you depending on whether or not they believe you will book jobs for them. To audition for TV shows, Movies, Commercials you will need an agent unless it is listed as an open call.

One doesn't hire an agent!

Follow the the procedure used by actors and agents in the city where you live.

Ask your actor friends, or acting teacher, the procedure for meeting with agents.

Are you living and plan on working in Los Angeles, Calfifornia? If the answer to this question is yes, then you will have a much easier time finding work and an agent. It's easy. All you have to do is look for "Agents for Actors in Los Angeles, California" on the Internet. If you have your SAG card, you do not legally have to pay your agent until you find work. Good luck!
