A relief pitcher comes in and holds the lead for the closer. If his team wins the closer gets the save and he would get the hold and the starting pitcher would get the win.

The Hold is an unofficial stat, designed to give something countable to middle relievers. There is more than one working definition depending on the source (remember, unofficial), but they're all pretty close. The general notion is "didn't blow the lead" with a hint of "came into a save situation, left a save situation for the next pitcher".

Baseball Almanac is pleased to present the FIRST EVER record book for the Hold stat — a pitching stat created in 1999 that is awarded to the pitcher(s) who is / are able to appear in relief and hold the victory for the closer (who might or might not get the save).
