Was it tobacco, or some type of herb that they grew on their own?

Actually, the most popular smoke was called Kinnikinnik. It was a mix of tobacco (which is a sacred herb to Native Americans) sweetgass, sage, willow bark, and sometimes other harmless plant material.
Sometimes marijuana, but not as often as white folks would like to think.
Peyote, as it is properly spelled, was primarily used in the Southwest by Apache, Comanche, Navajo, Hopi, Pueblo, and Zuni tribes. But only rarely, and then only in situations where sacred herbs were used, such as a healing ceremony or a vision quest. These things were not used to get high, like so many people think nowadays. Plants were considered spiritual helpers, and as such were not misused.

Zeebya has given the best answer thus far // // a lot of different 'weeds' can be smoked and have been smoke both by Native Americans and people across the globe. In fact Indians as in India often smoke Cloves. To this day there are a variety of legal herbs that people smoke. The Swiss make herbal cigs that are often used by actors who have portray smokers on film such as 'the Smoking man' of X-Files fame.

But most people will associate Native Americans with tobacco.

Peace...

I'm guessing it was plants they discovered smoked well. I don't know if tobacco had made it that far yet back then.

Peyote is mescaline. It's nothing like weed. More like shrooms or LSD. You're an idiot.
