I rent a 4 bdrm (all girls) and we have a low-flow toilet. I've lived here almost a year, and in the past few months, the toilet (which we scrub thoroughly multiple times a week) has begun to have this really strong urine smell. I have tried to clear the drain with baking soda, vinegar and boiling water, and I've made a paste of Vim w/bleach and baking soda, applied it all over the seat, under the rim, bowl, etc., left overnight and scrubbed off, scrubbed under the rim with a toothbrush, etc.--and it's STILL THERE!!

I have no idea how to get rid of it...and it really is so strong that my boyfriend (who shares a filthy bathroom with 3 guys) has complained. Does anyone have any tried and true solutions that WORK? (preferably low-cost)

Please, helpful and nice answers only...toilet jokes are too easy to make here :-)

Thanks

How do I tell for sure if it's the wax seal/gasket? I was just on my hands and knees smelling the floor, the wax seal, and the external toilet (ewww, I know), and the odor is NOT coming from any of these places. It is DEFINITELY coming from inside the bowl. We're hooked in with the city sewage system, NOT a septic tank.

Any more suggestions???

oh, and I don't even have floor tiles, nor a fan, and the smell is DEFINITELY not coming from pee spots on the floor.

I suspect it's coming from way under the rim, where even a toothbrush can't reach. Is there a good product for this--i.e. some cleaning thing you can clip to the side of the bowl that cleans under the rim with every flush?

woah....I'm already moving out in a month, and I don't have any rugs by my toilet (ew ew ew), and there is no way I'm going to call a plumber in to give my bathroom a total "structural overhaul" (I'm renting, remember?) calm down....

I even tried the lemon juice thing...setting it out overnight...didn't work. then I tried setting out vinegar...didn't work either.

There is a gasket in the connection with the bowl and the pipe leading to the outside. In Wales there is also the gasket which sits between the floor and the bowl. Either could be damaged. Check the level of water which is entering the water tank, maybe the water flush is set to light and the lack of water is emptying the trap at the S bend. Try filling the bowl half full with clean water and put some food dye in the water tank, then flush, Check the level of the dye in the bowl you should see the colour plainly, if not your toilet is emptying to much get someone who can service your type of toilet. The water in my bowl and S bend is the colour of the disenfectant block that I use. There should be water left in the bowl after a flush to act as a seal against sewer gass even with the low-flush type.

Too much chemical solutions and would still not do the job, might as well change apartment and get a clean bathroom. Sometimes, the sewer might be clogged and needs to be check, the reason why the smell still stays. Another thing to check is the exhaust pipe which may be clogged too. This is one big problem to solve. Get a sack of charcoal to suck the bad smell, disinfect the walls, ceiling and flooring and all fixtures, change the rug, (stripped the flooring, it may be underneath it... its a major work. Call a plumber to see if there is any leak or clogs from the pipes and exhaust pipes. Put regular incense to cleanse the walls of past odors.... the odor should be coming from another source.. check cracks on the flooring and walls, have it sealed... if chemicals cant do it, it must be a structural defect that needs to be altered and fixed.

It could be the wax seal that the toilet sets on in the floor. Sometimes, if they aren't seated properly or if the house settles and makes the floor change, the wax seal will brake down..

Call a plumber and see if they can find the problem.

Buy a wax gasket and get the boyfriend that complains about the smell to remove the toilet and replace the gasket. Hey why call a plumber when you got a guy? My husband changes those gaskets whenever we need it done. Or get your landlord to take care of the problem.

Maybe the smell is in the floor tiles grout? A strong bleach soak will work. Also some bleach in the bowl overnight may help.
Turn the fan on to remove the bleach smell.

Ammonia is the only thing I know that kills that smell.
Clean it all with ammonia once, especially on the outside.
Do not let ammonia get near the bleach.

Do you have a septic tank? The odor is a warning that
there is a problem with the septic system. Let your landlord know before the septic starts to back up. (Now THAT's
a smell!) Good Luck!

may be that the toilet is not seated well when installed -
may require a new wax gasket underneath

may be worth $20 to get the 'Urine Off' product with the UV light - where you can see the stuff -

If you cannot see it (and I KNOW you cleaned it really good)- it is probably that gasket

best of luck

wayoutthere said it - I saw this on Holmes On Homes a few weeks ago -it was the wax seal. The seal itself is inexpensive,so if you have someone that can do the job for you-like your BF- you could fix the problem for under $10
