The Battery is only 2 years old. I could not use it last years because of medical reasons. Today I tried to start the mower. The battery was dead. I could start the mower by jumpstarting it from my van. Do you think it will take a charge from a batterycharger, or do I need to buy a new battery?

Sounds like the battery has sat too long and has discharged and sat that way over time. You can try charging but it will probably not hold a charge. So you might be looking at a new one.

If the mower is going to sit for more than a month without use you should disconnect the battery and this will help to keep it in better condition. If you remove the battery from the mower do not sit it on a concrete floor, but keep it raised a little (on 2x4's). The cold floor will affect the battery.

If you live in a climate that freezes in the winter, then it's a good possibility that your battery will be dead, (frozen batteries will not charge nor hold a charge). If this did happen, it would have occurred after the charge had drained from the battery while setting idle. Check the sides of the battery for swelling. That happens when they freeze, if it's not swollen then try a trickle charge of 2-4 amps for a few days, then try to start it. Don't disconnect the cables while it's charging and they are hot from the charger. The battery gives off explosive gases while charging and it only takes a small spark to ignite them. If ignited, it could blow up spreading battery acid all over you and everything in the area. Just be careful.

A jump start is possable (Be sure to connect the dead battery first! ) Discharged lead/acid batteries do produce
hydrogen gas (Very explosive) That's why you connect it first as
to not spark around it. Positive to positive, Negative to negative
As for recharging, like hrlee said disconnect it first and a slow charge may produce results, if not replace the battery.

I would try to recharge it before spending the money for a new battery, unhook the battery cables before recharging and allow it to charge over night.
