Had one of my own like that a few years back. He was a very good baseball player but his concentration left him at game time. Fastest player on the team and would not run out ground balls in the infield or take the extra base with anything in the outfield. Here is what worked for me; I started taking a stop watch to the games and recorded all of his times from the batters box to first base and had a chart in his bedroom. We made a deal that every game he would try to improve his time from the last game. A little reward for the accomplishment always helped. It wasn't long before he was running hard everytime and asking me about his times. If done in a proper way every kid likes to know what his goals are and will try to beat it. Good Luck!!

My brother is one of the fastest kids in our town and he is 12. But during soccer and baseball games he didn't really put in the effort. For baseball my dad offered him 50 cents for each stolen base and also for each run that he scores. And since he has hussled a lot more.

well its ultimatly his decision if he wants to play...dont try to force him...

first find out why hes not going as fast, my guess is he is nervous when hes in a competitive game, whereas in practice its a more relaxed atmosphere...

try to help him focus solely on running and watching the base coaches, thats all a baserunner needs to do...

Don't listen to these clowns! Start huckin' baseballs at his feet! He'll get sick of it and start hustling out there , or, he'll go home with bruised feet! Worked for me! And I'm retarded!

motivate him for stolen bases and extra base hits that stay in the park,(no over the fence home runs, ground rule doubles).
