There are a number of relatively cheap places to live. Montana, Wyoming and Idaho are all relatively cheap, with beautiful scenery and plenty of outdoor activities to keep you busy. Avoid the "college towns" in Montana -- Missoula and Bozeman -- and the resort towns, and your cost of living will be very low indeed. If you're looking to live in a larger city, try Boise, Idaho, or the suburbs of Portland, Oregon. Denver is somewhat inexpensive as well, as far as larger cities go.
Alaska can also be cheap if you really want to live in a place that has 22 hours of darkness during winter days and 22 hours of sunlight during the summer. Psychologically, not many people can handle it. Although, the state pays residents just to live there. After one year of residency in Alaska, you will recieve approximately $1,800 USD per year from the state. Whether that is enough to make it "cheaper" than other states is questionable, considering the high cost of travel and groceries and goods, which all have to be imported.

Indiana is very affordable, as is Missouri and Arkansas. If you want a very depressed housing market you can try Michigan, particularly near Detroit as the housing prices have dropped due to economic downturn. Basically, look at lowest income rankings, and you will find those places are the cheapest places to live. (for a reason)

OK I would have to say where I live. Alma AR. I just bought a 4acre lot on a very nice creek. This subdivision has restriction like house has to be so big and etc.... I am building a 2,700 sq ft house and 3 car garage all of it cost me $275,000. If this was anywhere else it would be $500k plus.

I had luck in a tent on the side of a rocky mountain collecting firewood, and in the getto picking up cans. Guess it depends on what you want to do in life.

Depends on what size of community you are looking for - activities, job possibilities, etc.
Small - Rapid City, SD
Medium - Raleigh/Durham, NC
Large - Pittsburgh?
