I couldn't get through it and my friends are railing me about it. I just thought it was boring, you know, for a pulpy Stephen King novel. Am I alone?

I should rephrase. It wasn't complicated or 'over my head.' It's pulp for God's sake. If I can get through Nietzsche, I think I can read Stephen King. And I loved Salem's Lot. So how about this question instead:
WHY did you love The Stand?

You're absolutely not alone! I'm an avid reader and I was always a big fan of Stephen King, but for some reason this book just didn't capture my attention. I think I tried to read it about three times, and each time I'd make it halfway through and lose interest. So many people loved it - so it's nice to hear that I'm not the only one who couldn't get through it.

I loved "The Stand." Stephen King's best novel, I think. I even read the unabridged version.

Of course, Stephen King is not everyone's author of choice. Perhaps you'd enjoy reading something by Nicholas Sparks, or Danielle Steel.

I thought that the first half of the book was EXTREMELY scary for me, with the detailed description of how the vrus gets spread all over the world. runs chills down my spine everytime. but yeah, the 2nd half of the book wasn't as enjoyable for me. i love his other works much better. i don;t know why i sarted to not like the 2nd half of the book...it was just...a little odd, i guess? I mean it was still a great piece of liertary work, King is an amazing writer. but the story line just wasn't for me. I'll stick with vampires and houses that come alive, those seem more realistic. Still, the Stand wasn't that bad.

I guess it's a matter of taste, but I think The Stand is one of Stephen King's best books, if not THE best!

That is definitely one of my favorite Stephen King novels...I've even read it twice...the original, and then the longer version which came out somewhere around '90.

I enjoyed it for the same reason I enjoy most of King's novels....he has a gift for characterization and most of the people who populate his novels are believable....even the over-the-top caricature-like people because they reflect all the best or worst of those we have all come across in real life.Even though his stories aren't always home runs, I still enjoy reading them for the possibility of discovering someone like I may have once met.

Funny thing is... I read the book years ago and when it was made into a mini series all the actors/actresses playing the charactors looked the way I imagined... or did they? Anyway... I reckon it's ok!

i couldn't even finish it. it was ungodly long and not very captivating. i liked Stephen king for a good trashy read when i was younger but i just couldn't do it! tell your friends they are a special breed to be able to read/like it. maybe not GOOD special either.

I thought it was excellent. Maybe it went over your head? King is actually quite sophisticated.
