While not illegal, it can be quite dangerous without a midwife there. If you are at risk for any complications (petite frame, previous complications, health risks ect), I strongly suggest you go to the hospital. If you are adament about a home birth (which is gaining popularity) I suggest having a back up plan, should problems occur. Notify your nearest hospital, and have a phone handy to call for an ambulance. Also, all you need to do is call the department of health services and the social security office (if you choose to give your child a social security number...also optional..but if they go to public school they need it).

Its not against the law to have a home birth. I beleive all you have to do is go to the hospital so you can get an official birth certificate

Check with your state.. I doubt it. I think you will need and want to have a MD or licensed midwife present. Ask the them or call your state/county health department and ask them about the registration process.
I've known two friends who had babies out of the hospital. It's tough though, really tough... we could hear her screaming for a long way.

Not at all! Midwives do it all the time. I suggest you contact a birthing center and ask for info. That's a fairly common practice, and has been going on for thousands upon thousands of years.
