I want to write my signature but my first name is kind of long so is it legal to just leave it as B. Singh

I sign my checks with just a single letter for my first name. I first checked with my bank and they said that was fine.

I often sign credit card charge slips that way as well.

I know using a first initial, followed by a middle name and surname is legal. I'm not sure of the legality or the wisdom of using an initial and surname, given the fact of identity theft.

Yes, a friend on mine has his drivers licence say: C. Bradley Vogel.

The name was changed to protect the innocent, but he does go by his middle name and just use his initial for his first name.

Yes, that is fine. Infact, you don't even have to sign your name at all. It just has to be some symbol that represents you. It can be an X for that matter. However, it must be done with the intent to be bound.
