Why do you want to remove the carbon? That's what keeps your water buffered crystal clear. But if you think you have to remove it just slice open the top of the filter and dump it out, though carbon stops working about 72 hour's after you put in a new filter cartridge, that's why you are supposed to replace the carbon weekly.

Just remove the carbon cartridge.
The filter will still run without it.

The carbon is the small black rock looking material in the filter. It's usually in a cartridge of some type. Just remove that and you're home free.

Remove the carbon from the filter cartridge. Carbon is the pea-sized black looking stuff. If there isn't a pouch to remove it from, cut a tiny hole yourself to remove it.
