Recently moved to a lake community and thinking about buying a boat. What, besides the cost of the boat and taxes, should I be considering? Thanks...

There is the survey which is the best money that you'll spend when buying a used boat. This will give you an unbiased opinion about the condition of the boat and what repairs will be needed as well as sugessted repairs like "The main sail is in good condition, but is almost at the end of its life and with normal use will probably only last another two seasons or so."

Taxes and some place to keep your boat. Shop around for dock space and find a dock that you can afford as well as one with the ammenities you think you'll use. There is no need to spend money in a very nice marina with a swimming pool if you never use the pool.

Maintenance is something that people dont usually account for. Haul outs and bottom paint. It usually costs me around a thousand dollars a year for haulout, sanding, bottom paint, new zincs, engine maintenance, oil changes, brightwork, etc. I also maintain my own vessel and dont usually hire any work out.

Good Luck with your purchase. I hope I've helped you with your decision making and given you some things to think about.

Depends on the size of the boat. Sail boat? Speed boat? High price of gas, "slip rental" unless that is included in the community lake costs. The slip is to store your boat.

Guest costs, food and alcohol are probably the highest and then there is the boat maintenance.

You have to maintain it like a car. You might need to add a hitch to your vehicle, need to purchase life jackets, flotation devices, etc.

The boat company you are considering will be able to detail the maintenance, but all of those answers are different if you are buying a sail boat vs. one with an engine or a pontoon.

Obviously the bigger the boat, the higher the maintenance, and then you have to consider your personal vanity or care or concern to impress others on the boat you just bought. (In other words, you might buy a bigger boat than you can handle to impress people, then embarrass yourself when it is too costly to maintain.)

Have fun shopping though - boat lovers wouldn't trade it for the world.

Gas, moorage, and insurance have been suggested and are always ongoing operational costs. Having been a commercial boat owner for some 30-years my thoughts run to the ongoing expense of maintenance. This will be minimal in a fresh water lake, but it should influence the construction of the boat you purchase. I love the old wood boats, but they are high maintenance and labor intensive.

this is the powerhead has a serial variety, and that determines what variety year. The decrease unit has an element variety, i do no longer think any of those areas are serialized. additionally be conscious that Evinrude variety and serial numbers are stamped on the engine mounting bracket, yet for sure the brackets and vehicles could properly be separated. variety and serial numbers seem a pair different places on the powerhead, your mechanic would recognize approximately that i'm specific. this is not uncommon to mate a gearcase of yet another variety, in the event that they have compatibility, so I doubt that mismatch would be cloth -- if it worked you likely could be indifferent (if no longer a splash miffed). "AS IS - the place IS" is the regulation of the land, besides the undeniable fact that it does *no longer* excuse fraud. A written advert affirming "each thing works" while for sure, each thing does not artwork, constitutes fraud (to the acceptable of my knowlege, see disclaimer). it may probably be civil fraud, no longer criminal (besides the actuality that i do no longer completely recognize the thank you to distinguish the two in all situations). in the event that they suggested "each thing worked on our final time out", that could desire to be different (until you had information proving in any different case). If it suggested "to the acceptable of my knowlege and concept each thing works", they could have a protection. My opinion, in case you may get some form of fee adjustment from the broker (like in keeping with probability a million/2 of the restoration value), you would be forward over taking 'em to courtroom. For what this is properly worth, the $2,000 quote for rebuilding your gearbox is purely what i could anticipate. earlier approving the gearbox rebuild, make specific the mechanic does a compression try (an excellent marine tech will do it as a rely of huge-unfold technique besides) and different ordinary diagnostics on the motor -- if all of it tests out, you have an excellent, good motor there. BTW, i could probably lead you to have faith i could be confusing to artwork with interior the preliminary discussions, too; after all, i don't recognize purely yet what you're as much as the two -- i could come around and do the main appropriate ingredient regardless of the undeniable fact that, ultimately.

Dock fees, or trailer fees, and they do need repair and upkeep pretty often. Fuel is getting expensive too.
