You fail to say what antivirus software you are using. Some of them are pure garbage like Nortons.

You can run what is known as, "OnLine Scanner", for free direct from the server of Kaspersky and your entire system will be scanned. If a virus is found that is mised by your own antivirus, it will be killed in real time.

Kaspersky is rated # 1 in the world for virus detection from Russia.

Hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete immediately after you log on to make the Windows Task Manager appear and click the "Processes" tab. Under the User Name column, you should see the name of whoever's account you're log on and SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE, and NETWORK SERVICE listed a bunch of times.
Click the User Name column header to sort the processes by user name. This will make it easier to find things. Now, next to the user name, be sure that you see something called "explorer.exe" listed somewhere. If you don't, go to File > New Task (Run...), and a window titled "Create New Task" should appear with a text field labeled "Open:". Type in "explorer.exe" and click OK. Your desktop should appear.
If you don't see the File toolbar when the Task Manager appears, just double click on the Task Manager's border somewhere and it should appear. If the Task Manager doesn't open or it closes quickley after you hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete, then that means your computer is probably infected with the Look2me virus. I had this once, it attacks your registry files and it's difficult to remove.
If this doesn't work, then I don't know, you should probably reformat your C: drive, in which case, you'll loose all of your program files and have to reinstall them. But if you keep your other files (music, photos, games, documents, etc.) on a separate hard drive, then they'll be fine. If you have to reformat, then you should back up everything to an external hard drive or disks or something first.

there are a few things that can cause this:

1)explorer.exe is not starting
2)computer is just slow
--or--
3)spyware/virus

you said it's not spyware or a virus so, try this:
hit + at the same time --> a run window should pop-up. --> type "explorer.exe" (without the quotes), this may solve your problem.

if this does not work you want to go to a computer store and have them look at it, they can tell you a lot more by looking at it in person then I can tell you over this service.

System hangs with blank screen and cursor

If the System Hangs with Blank Cursor, then the issue might due to any of the following:

1. Boot files of the OS is corrupted.

2. Hard Drive is damaged/not detected.

Here are the steps to troubleshoot the issue:

Step 1:

Restart the NB and Reset the BIOS. Check if the Hard Drive is detected in the BIOS. If it is detected in BIOS, save changes and exit, and try booting. If it is not detected, then try HDD Test. Latest Model NBs have HDD Self Test Utility in BIOS. For the Older Models, you can use the Hitachi test Utility.

The Drive Fitness utility available at this link to test the hard drive:

Please refer this link for the detailed instructions for downloading the Drive Fitness Utility:

NOTE: The URL mentioned above will take you to a non HP Website. HP does not control and is not responsible for information outside of the HP Web site.

For using Bootable CD:

http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm

NOTE: The URL mentioned above will take you to a non HP Website. HP does not control and is not responsible for information outside of the HP Web site.

NOTE: Burn the ISO image in the CD, and boot the Presario with that CD to perform the Hard Disk Test. The detailed instructions are available in the manual available at the same link. Please download it and follow the instructions.

Step 2:

If the HDD is detected fine, but the system is not booting, then try to start the NB in Safe Mode. If it boots in Safe Mode or gets up to Startup Menu Screen, try the Last Known Good Configuration and System Restore.

Step 3:

If Step 2 fails to work, try Windows XP Repair Installation. If that too fails, then perform a full system restore.

Good Luck and Happy Processing!!

User account file might be corrupt. Go to safe mode, do a system restore. Create a new user account. Restart and try the new account. If it is OK, logoff and try your old account. If not OK, discard it and just use the new account.

Do you mean user accounts, as in windows users accounts.

If so then it sounds like you or the "administrator" needs to give the users the right to access to the computer.

erase that "another" account to avoid confusion. just stick on the account where you are comfortable and that everthing is in there. or if it works before just simply restore it from the dates when it is functioning well
