The war would have lasted for another couple of years at most. Japans economy was coming apart, as there was an effective blockade on the merchant trade. The bombing of the cities was destroying infastructure faster than it could recover from. A large part of the Japanese military was tied up defending the gains made in China and to a large extent unable to return to defend the home Islands.

Russia had entered the war against the Japanese as per her treaty obligations. However resistance on the invasion of the home Islands were would have been very spirited exacting a heavy price upon the invasion force.

With regards to the use of atomic weapons being used between 1945 and today has to a large extent been avoided due to the few number of nations with atomic weapons having fairly stable forms of government, as the number of nations increase so does the probability that these weapons will be used. As soon as an unstable government has access to such weapons and they deem themselves to be justified the the doors to hell have cracked wide open........

Japan was training its women, children and elderly to fight as nasty a guerilla war as possible - evn as its people were running out of food.

like it or not, the bomb saved not only US militray lives, but Japanese civilians - it offered the government a way to surrender while saving face - who wouldn't surrender in the face of that?

plus, human nature being what it is, sooner or later a bigger and more efficient bomb would have been deployed (Korea, perhaps). By some estimates, only 1/50 of the Hiroshima bomb actually detonated. Imagine what 5-10 years of more efficient technology could have added.

Also, if Truman hadn't used it, he would be blamed for extending the war by years, and Russia would have made larger advances into Europe while the US was busy with Japan.

Who knows, it isn't justifiable, they say it saved millions of AMERICAN lives, I guess they didn't care about the thousands of innocent civilians, which there were more of than military personal.
