How many cubic inches in one gallion?

I have to make a bird house for GEOMETRY CLASS and it has to hold exactly 1 gal. How many cubic inches is in one gallon? 231 inches sounds like too much, but if thats true, can someone explain how?

There are indeed 231 cubic inches in a gallon. I don't really know how to explain why it's 231 inches, sorry.
