Liverworts grow on trunks of dead trees in swampy areas. It pretty common around areas that are moist. A good place to look for them is in the woods, where the sun doesn't hit, and look close because it looks alot like frutose lichen.

They need a lot of moisture so you would find them groweing on rocks in streams in the woods, or on stream banks or on rotting logs in the woods.
