no, the wireless is now your way to connect to the internet. If you have just bought the usb adapter recently, return it for a nic based adapter, they are better, more reliable. The router itself must be plugged into the dsl modem, not the computer, that can be anywhere in the house.

With wireless the wireless router is connected to your Phone line the Computer can be anywhere within range It does not have to be in the same room. I sit in the garden with my USB wireless adaptor plugged in to my old laptop and it works fine.
There is very little difference between a laptop and a computer except in portability.

Yes, "something" has to be plugged into a 'phone line, and with me it's a BT Hub. It does give excellent coverage in our house. The laptop is in the attic, and the mainframe in the bedroom, both with usb wireless adaptors fitted. The 'phone socket is in the study downstairs.

your router has to be plugged in to phone line. thats all. we also have a pc upstairs and thats just got the usb wireless adapter in it. we used to have netgear, we found that less reliable as its signal was no so good. we now got bt homehub which has an amazing signal.
