Many people consider BGFs to be a somewhat small fish as they are nearly always sold as juveniles. They definitely do grow to in excess of 12 inches (I have one that size) so 46 galls is barely enough.
They are somewhat safe with larger species: Adult Angels, Goiurams, Discus etc. or larger fish that can look after themselves. Whilst they appear placid during the day, they are nocturnal hunters and will a make a meal of pretty much any small fish (tetras etc). They particularly like midnight snacks on neons but you won't find any half chewed carcasses as that mouth is bigger than it looks and they won't leave any evidence.
My neighbor lost a school of 20 neons over 3 nights without a trace so choose tankmates VERY carefully.

Black ghosts can get huge in nature but rarely exceed about 14-16" in an aquarium. That's still too big for your 46 gallon I'm afraid. You could keep one for a while in that tank, but you would have to trade it in for a smaller one one it got up to about 10" or so. Comparable fish would really be anything to large for the black ghost to eat, but also not too aggressive as BGK are not hostile fish and need fairly calm tank mates. Angels are a good choice.

The ghost gets up to 16" long. Compatible with angelfish, discus, gouramis, catfish, bichir, oscar, arowana. All knifefish eat smaller fish, snails and crustaceans; must be kept with larger species that match their growth rate. Most species are territorial and aggressive towards it’s own kind. Usually peaceful with fish of similar size, but many are territorial and quarrelsome among themselves. A medium sized fish will require a large tank (45-55 gallons) as these fish grow rapidly. An adult fish (over 15”) will require will require 90-110 gallon tank.

Black Ghost Knife fish can grow up to 2 foot long, maybe even longer. The aquarium for the Black ghost should be large with a small grained substrate. It should be fairly densely planted with many floating plants. The floating plants will help the fish overcome its shyness as it is nocturnal and sensitive to bright lights. Driftwood is also recommended along with some sort of inert piping for the fish to hide in. The water should be soft, and kept at a temperature of between seventy-five and eighty-two degrees. The pH should be neutral to acid. Feeding should be a mix of live tubifex brine shrimp and meaty frozen foods. The Black ghost is sensitive to water pollutants, changes in water conditions, and medications. Although timid they are aggressive to their own kind but can be housed with other large peaceful fish such as Angelfish, Discus and Gourami.
