I want to know about this dot called bindi or tikka (I am not sure about the name or the spelling, sorry), worn by women. I know you get it when you are married or when you go to a temple. But a lot of girls wear a tiny piece of jewelry in this spot. What does it mean? Is it religious or fashionable? Would it be wrong to wear it for fashion reason only?

Its a custom to wear bindi daily whether married or unmarried in south Indian states like Tamil nadu.It is a strong belief in down south that if you wear a binidi you will not be mesmerised by anyone or wont be caught by evil spirits.it is also believed that a women's power is concentrated in the spot were the bindi is kept.
Anyway today binids have become a fashion statement! I think it would be great if one understands the meaning of wearing a binidi & wears it!!

well, the origins of the bindi are really ancient, and hindu religions believed that the bindi offered the wearer (usually a woman) protection from the many different kinds of evil in the world. people believed that by placing a bindi on your forehead, your thought processess from all evil things would be vanquished, and you would think good thoughts, therefore receiving good thoughts, and hereby eliminate any evil.
but as today's ever-changing society takes notice of ancient customs, the humble bindi has been transformed into a glamorous and symbolic icon to represent many women, be they Indian or not. It has been made fashionable to wear the bindi, and there is no law that states that it is wrong to wear a bindi for fasahionable reasons. people today are exposd to all kinds of evil, and as long as the bindi is remembered, it is no crime to wear it as a fashion accessory

It's part of the Hindu religion. Yes, it's wrong to wear it for fashion reasons only--that's insulting and putting down and disgracing Hindus. It's only worn by Indian woman. So it's like wearing a cross necklace or the Star Of David or the Ome (hindu) symbol just for fashion. I saw the other answers saying people who aren't Hindu wear it, but that's an insult to our culture. I mean, it's like Jewish people wearing a cross. It's not just a fashion thing. It's our culture.

I believe it is representative of "the third eye" in the Hindu religion. I do believe it would be wrong to wear it if you are not Hindi, just as a "fashion statement", and I don't like seeing it on women/girls who do.
I am not Hindi. I am Christian...but I kinda get offended when people who have no idea what the Cross stands for wear crosses as a fashion statement. I imagine that people of Hindu faith would feel similarly.

Check out this site;

There are women today who wear it who don't have a religious tie to it. It is also supposed to protect your kundalini energy from leaving the body. People who study different types of yoga wear them too. I probably wouldn't wear it if it was in the country in which it is significant to the culture out of respect. What you do in your own circle of friends might be different.
