What seperated Jimi from other guitarists at the time was his uniqueness and originality which is still inspiring contemporary musicians. In terms of competition (if there is such as thing), Jimi was technically proficient, but what sets him apart from most guitarists is the ease and naturality of his playing, which was is the first thing someone can tell. If a guitarist knows 3 chords and plays them confidently and comfortably, I would consider that person to be more listenable than what is called a "Shredder" in guitar world, a guy who just plank wanks the fret board with no real reason and reference. Jimi was comfortable, experimental and relevent with his playing

Jimi was great. I think right now the only guitarist with as much soul and plays with as much feeling would be Slash. He plays very similar I think, of course he is not a good as jimi. I think the art of Rock roll guitar has gone away sadly ever since, the alternative music was introduced, guitar playing has gotten sloppy. Stevie Ray vaughn was better than Jimi though. Eddie van halen could fly on a guitar as well.

I think it is too close to call between Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page. Different styles so it is difficult to make a conclusive comparison.

No one could compete with Hendrix when he was alive, much less today.

Before you say there are people alive today who can compete with Hendrix, learn to play guitar and get back with me.

Bloody brilliant for his time (another docu on now BBC4 btw) but Joe Satriani et al have moved forward with effects technology and technique. JH was the Godfather though before anybody disses me.

Compete? No but is on the same level, Prince, Carlos Santana, Bootsie Collins. But music is no competition,...what's good is good.

He was a master! Unfortunately, he played self-indulgently, always demonstrating how good he was technically. The music was secondary, and as a result, not very entertaining, unless you went to see him to admire his skill!

The only one who can even come close when he really lets loose and plays guitar is John Mayer.
