The hole in the ceiling where the cable comes down is not sound. It's difficult to get raw plugs in. The ceiling in general is sound and infact newly plastered but cable hole is brittle and too big. The hole needs to be filled somehow...

Any advice gratefully received.

Ok, basically the whole where the electric cable comes in is slightly too bid due to the surrounding plaster being weak. Will not hold raw plugs.

It's really hard to understand what you are asking. When you say the cable, are you talking about the string to turn on the light, or the power cable that feeds the light? I guess you can either use a poli-fill compound to strengthen the plaster first. Then drill and make the hole for the rawl plug. Or just go buy an ornimental ring that goes under the light and covers the hole.

I would take the box out and put a fan light stringer in its place. It is a box that "expanses" in the ceiling and braces up against the trusses. They can be pick up at Home Depot, while you are there get a beauty ring for your new light to cover the hole from the plaster. This combination should give you the support you want and the look you need to satisfy you wife...lol

Let it dry out first, if the rest of your lights on this floor are working then the fault is with the switch if not then a fuse has blown or breaker tripped. If this is the case unscrew the cover of the switch and let it dry fully before reseting or replacing the fuse. If the switch is damaged and i assume as it is in a bathroom as it is a pullcord then you will need an electrician to change it. It is illegal for anyone who is not Part P qualified under the Building regulations to work on the electrics in bathrooms or kitchens. The electrician should also issue with a certificate and inform building regs who will also issue certification.
