His career as a Cosmonaut and the details most people don't know about him. What was the story behind the story. I know he was the first U.S. Citizen to orbit the earth.

He was never a cosmonaut, which is a Russian astronaut, by the way.

John Glenn was an Astronaut

John Glenn was the first American to orbit the earth and he was the oldest person to ever fly in space. Mr. Glen was also a famous senator in Ohio. He did many famous things in his life.
John Glenn was born on July 18, 1921 in Cambridge, Ohio. When he was two his family moved to New Concord, Ohio. He went to New Concord High School. It is now John Glenn High School. He fought in World War II and in Korea where he was a jet pilot. In July 1957 he flew the first transcontinental flight at supersonic speed. John Glenn was assigned to NASA in April 1959 and has been in space 218 hours. He orbited the earth in a space ship called “Friendship 7” on February 20, 1962. Glenn was so popular he was elected U.S. Senator in November 1974. On October 29, 1998, he was the oldest person to fly in space on Shuttle Discovery to help research on how weightlessness affects the body of an older person. He was 77 years old. John Glenn is still alive right now and lives with his wife, He is not a senator anymore . I think John Glenn is very interesting. I would like to meet him someday.

Glenn has written at least a couple of books on his life that should be in your local library. Check them out.

By any definition, the man is an American hero. One story you might not know: When he fought in Korea, one of his wingmen was baseball legend Ted Williams. Then astronaut, Senator, and astronaut again.

And speaking of heroes, how about his wife, who had to overcome a severe stuttering problem -- not easy when your husband is the first American to orbit the Earth.
