A four year old computer is nearing the end of its life anyways, esp if its a laptop. I'd pobably only use it for homework, and even then I'd keep it backed up. Oblivion is pretty stressflul on a system, esp an older one like that. The alternative is to use it until it fails, and it WILL fail soon. And then you have an excuse to get a new computer. For most HS students, esp gamers, I recommend a desktop NOT a notebook.

The best way is to check the game box to see the "minimum requirements" needed to run the game.
I think you'll be OK, but I don't know how old your laptop is. Newer ones have 512 MB of RAM. That's 512 Megabytes of Random Access Memory (RAM). The Oblivion game probably does not require more than that.
If you want to put your dad at ease, load the startup disk and fine a "readme" file. It should tell you and your "daddy" what the minimum requirements are. I wish you all the best in "teaching" your "daddy" more tricks.

Oblivion probably won't run on a 4 year old laptop. I got a decent laptop in 2002 and now it's a hunk of crap: can't play any games with a decent framerate. So I would say you might try it but you'll need to have a very nice laptop to run Oblivion. Minimum specs for good gameplay might be

1 gig of RAM, a powerful GPU like a Geforce 7900gs Go, 2.00ghz cpu

My laptop has 1GB RAM...
If your laptop is new, then go for it. I played game on previous laptops with only 512 MB and they were not 4 year old.
Make a try and see. The only thing that might happen is: your game is slow... but it won't harm your laptop.
