how come microwaves in restaurants and other places can heat metal objects but our ones will give off sparks??
They just shove those foil dishes in.

Metals used in the microwave oven are designed specificaly for this use. No difference in the commercial units, except for the power rating and features.

As long as the foil or metal container does not touch the sides of the microwave you can use them. It's when they touch the side they cause a short circuit that gives off sparks.

No the aluminium foil will spark,pop etc. in your microwave oven and that will ruin your microwave oven. If you want to reheat something in the microwave oven put it on a microwave safe plate and cover it with saran wrap and fold back a corner for the steam to escape.

Some foil can go in microwaves; It's tinfoil off the roll that causes a problem!

Some of the newer microwaves allow you to microwave foil in them. The one I have right now allows you to do that.

I've never known a restaurant to use microwaves for thier food, so I would think they used ovens.

I also think that if the foil you put on is smooth then there are fewer places for it to conduct with, but if it is crinkly then there are lots of places for it to spark.

because they are using a thicker foil than a tin foil that we usually buy in the supermarket.

They are probably special non reflective foil.
