What does this mean 11.0Mbps?

Question

Hi, i have just swiched to virgin and was told by them that i will have a faster internet service and speed. Can someone tell me what speed is 11.0Mbps. Is it slow. They did say it would fluctuate from time to time because we have the internet tthrough the phonelines, (broadband).
The other day it read 54.0Mbps.
At the moment my internet is running slow, very slow. I can send an email through the post quicker.
Also, in a morning it runs rapid, so can someone explain why?

11 mega bits per second. In english it's as fast as your connection is going, it is a slow connection, but it can still go to a website faster than dial up. 54 mbps is a fast connection like a wireless cable connection, but it is not the fastest. I can't tell you why your connection fluxuates in the morning, that is a little weird.

That means whatever it is you are loading or downloading is going at 11 megabytes per second. For instance, say that your file is 121 Mb, it will take 11 seconds to download. (this is for files.)

But this tends to be slow. For the internet, a good strong speed would be 54 Mbps. I'm not sure why it would run faster in the morning. Maybe if your network is unsecure or if you're linking to someone else's wireless networks, there are less people on in the morning as opposed to the evening.

11.0 Mbps means 11 million bits per second of data. A single byte is needed for a character and a byte is 8 bits, so that's about 1,375,000 characters per second. But there are other things (control functions, etc.) that also need to be taken care of by that 11 Mbps of bandwidth, so you probably won't get your own data transferred much faster than 700,000 or 800,000 characters per second.

OTOH, that is one -helluva- lot faster than I can read
