A golfish needs 10 gallons of water per fish. When kept properly, they live 20 - 30 yrs and grow to be 8 - 10 inches. Your tank is too small for that to happen. The ammonia levels will rise and poison the fish. Even with frequent water changes, the tank size will stunt the fish's growth, causing internal organ damage.

I agree with MM: if you're going to have a coldwater tank, a few white clouds will be good. If you're adding a heater, you could put a male betta and perhaps an African dwarf frog or two in. You could also have a neon tetra tank with a school of no more than 5. That is overstocked as well, and you'd have to make sure you keep up with your water changes. Another idea is keeping 2 small dwarf gouramis (the ones that get no bigger than 2 - 2.5"). Again..you'd need a heater. Hope this helps.

You best bet would be to return the goldfish before it out grows your tank. They get far too large for a 3 gallon tank and in fact need about a 15-20 gallon to be comfortable.

This would allow you loads of choices for your tank. If you want to keep fish without a heater, the best choice for your tank would be White Cloud Mountain Minnows. Very colorful and pretty little coldwater fish.

If you have or install a heater on the tank I would suggest 3-4 male guppies. Very bright and colorful and active as well.

That's just two options, tons more exist.

That goldfish will grow to be bigger, so that's the only type of fish you can have in there. You could upgrade to a 10 gallon tank, where you could add a school of 5 minnows and maybe a snail or two.

As far as i know, you should only have one fish for every three gallons

Please, return that goldfish.

They will quickly outgrow the 3 gallon, and die.

You could get some Guppies and/or Platies.
