It's pretty big, and transportation is excellent by the way - to contradict the answerer above me.
Edmonton is slightly smaller than Calgary, and larger than Chicago.
Taxi or bus is fine, but if you want more freedom, it's a good idea to rent a car.

I went to visit Edmonton once and i was glad i rented a car. There is very poor public transportation and to get from one end of the city to the other takes a lot of planning and a lot of time.

It is not as big as a mexican city ,people wise, but it is spread out way more than any other cities i've visited

Compared to an american City .. the size of Chicago

Be smart.. rent a car.

Greater Edmonton is just over a million people. Greater Calgary is just slightly larger, but Calgary proper is a lot larger than Edmonton (3/4 million) proper. I am not sure if it is like Detroit or Columbus.
