I am in Europe, and I've traveled alone to the US and to England, but I did know the language. I've traveled once to the French part of Belgium too and I don't speak any French beyond 'oui' and 'non', but then again Belgium is close by.
I think for me it depends more on what the country's like than whether I know the language or not; a country that's generally known as pretty safe I'd feel okay traveling alone, I'm sure I'll usually find someone who speaks English or I'd make do flipping through a guide book! Countries that are less safe, especially for a woman alone, I wouldn't go to even if the language were Dutch or English.

Well, I traveled there alone, but I met a friend when I got there. Does that count? I flew to Germany, then we had a 2 week car trip through Germany and Austria. And neither one of us spoke much of the language. But it was a great trip!!

Yes. I use to travel all over the world for a job I had. It can be challenging trying to get by. If you're the type of person that gets frustrated easily, then you shouldn't attempt it.

yes, nearly every country has signs in English because its an international language, i don't think the language thing will prevent me from flying alone

Yeah I would. I mean I live in Dublin Ireland so I guess central europe isn't so far for me.
I can speak for Dublin by saying..... it is not as safe as the US... but I would consider it safe in comparison to other Irish/ British Towns/Cities.
