well .. if we only consider "system slowing down" and "pops up" .. then we can't say for sure that there is a virus in your system .. not at all .. although there are viruses that do such a thing ..

let's not consider the "pop ups" for a while ..

system slowing down could be for many reasons .. such as .. lots of program are installed .. so it hardly boots from your drive .. .. even after uninstalling them .. some of them leave some files that affect in some way your system performance ..

registry .. your RAM .. virtual memory .. viruses .. programs installed .. even games installed .. ala these effect your performance ...

if this problem appears after installing some program .. then you may try to uninstall it ... and restart ur PC .. also you can try to "restore" your system to an ealier point .. using the "System Restore" feature that comes with XP .. and see if the system still "heavy" or it gets better .. !!

about the pops up headache .. it's just that you are using the internet without any "firewall" software .. and it's really important to have one installed on your system .. and there are many on the net .. and you will need to pay a small amount of money to get a good one .. .. to solve the current problem you will need to install some of those "Pop-Up Washers/killers/stoppers" .. and there are a lot of them on the net ... ..

finally .. in such a case .. I don't bother my mind .. and I go immediately formating .. .. but i wanted to explain for you reasons so you make sure next time to know how to cover up your system holes ..

all the best ,,

Go to download.com and download Adaware S.E., it's free and should get rid of the spyware on your machine, then get yourself
Norton System Works which includes Norton Anti-Virus and other programs that keep your machine running good and will
detect and fix problems with Windows and other hardware like your hard drive. That you'll have to pay for. You should also defragment your hard drive, go to Programs then Accessories
then System tools and look for defragment. Good Luck

Yes darling you got infected...

what I would do: first try to have a soft (antivirus + adware + any other that is useful to protect a PC) and try to have the virus identified and removed.

second (if the antivirus is not able to remove the virus, what may happen) look on the Internet for a how-to remove or come back here and ask for it.

You better go for clean install. Antiviruses are good but they only help to prevent PCs to become affected. After attack, it won't help as your pc is is already infected with virus. Norton Antivirus won't even install. So, Please go for a clean install and install antivirus (Download some latest free realease from you friends PC and keep it handy in a USB disk) before installing other software or access your PCs other partitions or even connecting to internet. After installing the Antivirus, connect to internet and update it. Then run a full scan to your PC.

Thanks

Get anti-virus software, such as Norton, and check your computer for a virus. The program, in most cases, will take care of it.
