I already know that you can download mp3s as Quicktime mp3s, but you can't put those on iPods.

mp3 is mp3. And mp3 can be imported into iTunes.

m4a is the protected iTunes format. iTunes will play both of these.

Actually, MP3 is an iTunes format.

iTunes supports many formats. In fact, iTunes will convert CD's to mp3's if you change the default settings in the advanced tab.

Simply put your mp3 in a folder somewher and import it into iTunes.
