Maybe he was scared that you wouldn't support him and was worried about telling you face to face! Just text him back and tell him how you feel! But the fact that he is gay should not effect your friendship! If you support him say so! If you don't feel comfortable talking about it tell him! Own your feelings but I am sure that he was just looking for some reassurance of a friend and was confiding in you!
