Koufax supporters always, ALWAYS avoid discussing the first half of his career, when he sucked. Yeah, he was great once the team moved into Dodger Stadium, and it wasn't only the park that gave him his success. But he certainly benefited from favorable circumstances.

Stunningly long and successful career, Warren Spahn.

Great career, I'll take Lefty Grove.

Great peak, probably still take Grove, though Koufax is a good choice.

One great season, Grove, Koufax, or Carlton.

Need to win Game 7 -- Randy Johnson at his peak.

koufax had 4 consecutive great seasons from '63-'66 in which he had an average ERA of +/-1.85. From '55-'61 he was adequate and in '62 he was very good but I wouldn't term it great.

Carlton had 18 straight good seasons from '67-'84 (average ERA was about 3.30), with several of those being very good or great.

So between the two, although Koufax had 4 straight amazing seasons, Carlton was consistently good for a much longer period of time, and he gets my vote.

Insofar as the all time best, I'd say Spahn, Grove and Carlton, in no particular order

No one was more dominating than Koufax when he was in his prime, but Carlton had staying power. One game, winner takes all, give me Koufax. Building a franchise, I'll take Carlton.

I know this is a biased opinion but i think Lefty Carlton is the greatest of all time(I am from Philly). I mean he led some horrible teams here, e.g. he had 27 wins for a team with 56 total wins. He is third(?) i believe in Ks. I may be wrong but I believe for the most part Sandy was on a great team most of his carrear, while Lefty was on some misarable teams until Schmidt, Bowa, and Luzinski came up. He would have had more wins had he been on another team. However, they both would be fantastic on about any team.
