Against popular believe: There is absolutely no anonymity when using some of the most popular downloading software such as Limewire and torrents.
To direct download from another person as p2p (peer-2-peer) suggests, you have almost no control over with who you connect. So even when you are only downloading 1 song, or 1 movie you might connect with over 100,000 computers in the mean time.
Torrent software companies offer these so called "IP-filters" to block the program from connecting with government computers, but alas, by the time theres a humoungous list of government computers, the government is on a different IP. So your out of luck with those.
Now specifically Demonoid:
The fact that Demonoid uses a private tracker is the fact that to connect to the trackers and see who has what to offer (that specific file you are trying to download) you need have first signed up at their website. Their website has many legal mumbo jumbo which protects them from being prosecuted to the limit that the legislator allows (since no legal protection is absolute if they decide to change the law) This also means they can not be subpoenad for your information.
Coupled with the fact that most of these services are located in other nations, and even then have their servers spread out internationally, and intentionally keep the minimum amounts of traceable records, it is your safety wall, that for the last couple of years has held strong.

Nothing on the Net is anonymous. The P2P service provider may keep your downloading private but many people forget that everything downloaded from a P2P network goes through their ISP. Whenever an ISP has to reveal records to the authorities they are legally obliged to do so. So you always take a risk when you download pirated stuff.
Unless you are downloading stuff, legally published under the Creative Commons license, I say stay away from Peer-to-Peer networks. And yes, malware is another drawback of these networks, so I can't see any merit in using these networks, generally utilised for illegal activities.

The risk is yours to take. People are caught every day for downloading music, movies, etc. etc., and have criminal charges filed against them in just about any place in the world.
This is the risk that one takes when the use P2P, not to mention, trojans, keyloggers, hijackers, spyware, etc. etc.
