It was invented mostly as a fail-safe communication system for the military where if one site was destroyed, the system could keep working.
Why is it so great now? It allows people from the whole world to share their truths with other people, unencumbered by political censorship. And on-line shopping. And instant information. And on-line updates. And camera reviews. And, and, and.... whatever the human mind can conceive next.

Congrats to Jim
Not many people are aware of this however the Internet as a concept was designed and put into operation in the early 1960's for use by the American Army as a method of safe communication.
It was later developed for the educational sector as a resource.
In the early 1990's the concept of an Internet browser such as Internet Explorer was founded, with World Wide Web url being assigned to public pages.
The Internet is useful (great) due to the large audience that is attracted to the Internet, its ease of availability and content.
The Internet can supply
» Free Instant Communication
» References
» Interesting information
» Games
» E-commerce
» Shopping
To name a few aspects. The Internet is a time saver to both business and entertainment.
All the best

The history of how it was invented is rather long ang complicated, but boils down to the fact that several sets of people created networks over large geographical areas to talk to other members of the same set.
The first groups involved were the American military, and a group of universities, who wanted to exchange files and messages within their own group.
A number of other "Wide Area Networks" (WAN) were also being created for specialist groups, either in their own interest, or for commercial purposes.
The military group, and the academic group then found that they had a certain amount of information that they wanted to share between the two groups, and therefore merged their networks to create a large WAN, and by a similar process, other WANs were joined in, either to benefit from the information shared, or from the improved communications links available.
Well it just grew and grew, and smaller groups or companies and eventually individuals started to join, mainly in order to use the fast links available across the country or across the world, until it became world wide. (the world wide web)
The main reason that it is so great is that nobody saw that it was going to get so big until it was too late for any authority (like a government or ISP) to impose their own control over it.
