I've been on the depo-provera shot for the last 18 months and I will not be continuing the next shot for personal reasons. My husband and I just started using condoms as the shot will expire on May 24. What kind of birth control have some of you other women used in that same situation. I am worried about pregnancy as my husband and I are not at that point in our life where we want to have children.

I ask this as the last time I got off the depo shot, I had my period a week later.

And yes, I know abstenice is the best way, but like I said, I'm married, so that's not an option.

Thanks!

Abstenince is not the best way when your married. I too used depo and didn't like it so much. I was lucky to not have my period, but I did gain a little weight and couldn't work ANY of it off. I then went to the patch. It was pretty nice to only fool with it once a week. But with the patch you have a period. I'm not sure if you wanting to get rid of your period. If so, you'll have weight issues. My mom is using something they actually put inside of you. Sorry, don't know what it's called, but that's suppose to be pretty good as well. You keep it in for a few months, then go back to the doctor and they replace it with a new one. Good luck

I'm on it, and have been on it since grade 8, for acne problems. It most definitely helped me in quite a few ways. For example, I never when through the hating my parents stage, because it evened out my hormones quite a bit. I'm 23 now. Over the years, I had a few problems. For one, the pill that I was on was for acne, and when I started getting lots of non-birth control related health problems, they decided the pill had too much of some chemical that can cause blood clots in it, and with my health stuff they didn't want to take any more risks, so I switched pills. Some gave me much more acne, some made me absolutely psycho, but I'm on one now that I love (Yasmin). A couple things you should note: each pill is different and will effect people differently. Talk to your doctor about what's best for you, and make sure you tell her about any history in your family of blood clots or anything of the sort. Another thing, every so often you'll hear in the news about some pill that caused blood clots that's "being looked into". My doctor told me that the risk of clots is always there, and that person just happened to get them, and then the family is making a big thing in the news about it because they got scared. Though you should always keep that in mind, don't let the news reports scare you. There are other options too. There's the birth control patch, there's an IUD (I think that's what it's called), diaphrams, etc. Talk to your doctor about it. What the pill does is tricks your body into thinking your pregnant, so it sort of gets ready for that. I would personally stay away from the ones that give you your period every four months. That just seems super un-natural to me. Congratulations!

I currently am on the IUD, and from first hand experience I DO NOT recommend this method. I would opt the 2nd time around for the Pill, the Shot or Condoms. The procedure is pretty evasive, despite what some may say and can have adverse side effects. Although I haven't had bad side effects the procedure was pretty painful, I experienced labor like contractions and my libido was gone for a few months. Not fun. It also caused me to gain some weight and has made me a little moodier. ( I'm sure something your hubby could do with out :) )
I would check with your OB/GYN and see what she recommends, I just strongly advise against the IUD. Good Luck

Are you planning to ever have children? Are you looking into a permanent form of bc?

If you are looking into a permanent form of bc... I would suggest the Essure method. It's less invasive than a tubal ligation, there is no cutting or burning involved. It's all done via hysteroscopy. Small coil springs are inserted into the fallopian tubes, causing scar tissue to build, blocking the tubes, preventing pgcy.

For 3 months after the procedure a back-up form of b/c is required until an HSG (hysterosalpingogram) is done to make sure that the tubes are definitely blocked.

If you are looking for a non-permanent form of bc, then there is the birth control pill, the IUD, the Nuvaring... Your best bet is to talk to you gyn about it and decide together, with your husband, on what would be best for you.

I have two kids and am using Mirena IUD. IT SUCKS because I didn't "Spot" like they said I would. I got a full on period for over two weeks!! They prescribed some estrogen to help but it doesn't. Before, I just used spermicide (VCF films) and not once did I get pregnant. Just the week before my period, I tried to not have sex so much! I am probably going to keep the stupid IUD just for convenience sake, but it's really annoying with the "spotting" (yeah right).

Good luck

Well, you COULD take the pill... which sucks doing the same thing every day, that's for sure. You could try the nuva-ring, not sure how that works, though. And definitely don't try the patch, you've probably seen all the bad rep about that. But if you wanted to have freedom you could definitely try nuva-ring. I would just ask the gyno.

I have an IUD and love it. It is an implant in the uterus and does wonders. I have been on it for 4 yrs. They can be removed any time and you can get pregnant anytime. Good luck.
