You are right, a male betta will attack other bettas, but other than that they are generally quite peaceful fish and can be kept with most any other community fish as well and snails and things like dwarf frogs.

Betta Safe fish include Rasboras, Danios, Black Neon Tetras, Guppies(not too fancy), Corys, sometimes Ghost Shrimp and other fresh water shrimp. Also a nice Nerite snail for algae control. All the fish should be kept in groups of 3-5 or more depending on the size of your tank. As always watch your betta, some are agressive to other fish, most are not agressive at all to other fish.

Despite being generally aggresive, Bettas will get along better with fish that have very small or short fins. You can try searching on the net for 'fish compability' this will tell u what type of fish/animal can live with them.
You can also ask the person at your petstore where you are planning to buy from.
Ps Females can live together and get along more if there are 3 because of a hierarchy, males, likes you said, cannot live together at all... shame because they're so cool looking...

If it's a female betta, then lots of other creatures could live with it. If it's a male betta, then the amount of fish is very limited. Snails, shrimp (some types), other peaceful fish such as neon tetras, zebra danios, platies, and swordtails can live with females. Snails are basically the only thing that can live with male bettas. Tiger Barbs could live with it too, but then they'd both start to nip fins.

It's true betta's can be a bit aggressive - I wouldn't recommend putting snails in with your betta, and depending on the size of your tank, it might be best to leave your betta alone in the tank. If you have, say, a 5 gallon tank, you'd best leave your betta alone in there as they are very territorial. If you can get a 10 gallon or higher, you might try a few peaceful bottomfeeders with one betta; Corydoras aeneus is an excellent choice and come in an albino variety, but they should be kept in groups of 3 or more.

As for plants, go for soft and bushy plants - ferns, cobomba (although this plant will shed horribly if there isn't enough light and clog your filter), Hygrophila Polysperma 'Rosenvarig', Hygrophila Difformis, Ludwigia Repens, or Nymphaea Lotus 'Tiger Lotus'

Go for live plants for your betta.

Get shrimps, but not small ones. The betta wouldn't harm it most definitely. Also, get cherry barbs and certain types of danios, tetras and bottom feeders.

Danios and small barbs like the cherry barbs can out swim the bigger betta fish and do not have colourful finnage that seemingly portray huge targets that says, '' Hey come bite me''

Also, I have no idea why but the fact is that bottom feeders are rarely picked on..maybe its the fact that the fishes see them as really dirty creatures that eat anything from the bottom including their own poo poo.

I have a Betta in a five gallon tank and I have guppies, snails and two bottom feeders in the tank, and everyone gets along beautifully. My Betta likes to hide out in his flowerpot once in a while though.

The only fish that I know of that can't live with Bettas are; Angelfish and Guppies.

You could put snails and frogs, but not shrimp...

I have zebra danios and an african dwarf frog with mine
snails are oh-kay as well as the african dwarf frogs
as far as fish go: the fish must be smaller, not colorful, not aggressive, no large fins
hope this helps!
