some of the earlier WWII propoganda ones would have kids asking lots of questions not to mention the underlying racist themes that were tolerated in the 1940's.
also, how do children react to Elmer Fudd shooting Daffy Duck in the beak with a shotgun and it spinning around?

The animators at the time made these cartoons to entertain themselves. They did what they thought was funny (and it was). Now, most people see cartoons as exclusively for children and they assume the LT & MM cartoons are the same way. When I was little, I got the slap-stick humor. And there were also jokes that I didn't get until I got older. And when I saw Elmer shooting Daffy in the face, I thought it was funny because I knew it was not real.

Because starting in the 60s, movie exhibitors started seeing the cartoons as children entertainment when cartoons like "Red Hot Riding Hood" had tons of suggestive and topical humor and violence.

Somewhere along the way, some sick adult thought it would be funny and cute...... Most kids laugh at it, Look at Tom and Jerry too for that matter...

Back in the 40's, there was no television, and therefore no way to sell Slip-N-Slide's, Barbie's, and sour gummi bears. Now there are, and you have to do that with cartoons.

They were meant for both, actually.
However, you need to be an adult to understand some of the jokes.
Kids only understand the slap-stick humor.

Maybe it's about length. If they were less long-lasting, they wouldn't be able to appeal to both. They were written, I'l add, with enormous modesty, as well.
